5. Product Information

Slabbed17.com sells both graded and ungraded comic books, cards, graphic novels, collectibles, and related merchandise. We at Slabbed17.com are not professional graders. Unless otherwise stated, the only merchandise that is truly graded consists of items certified by third-party companies such as CGC, CBCS, PGX, EGS, PSA, Beckett, etc. We at Slabbed17.com use our own approximation system to help classify an item's likely condition into one of the following categories.

Near Mint Range (9.0 – 9.8)
At the top of this range, the book is close to mint condition with only the most minor flaws present. There may be a faint stress line near the staples, though the staples themselves sit centered and clean with no rust. The cover lies completely flat with no surface wear, and the inks remain bright and highly reflective with minimal fading. Corners are cleanly cut and sharp, allowing only the slightest blunting. Any stress marks are nearly invisible, and any bindery tears must measure under 1/16 of an inch. Only the most subtle binding or printing defects are acceptable. The cover is well-centered and securely attached to the interior pages. Paper feels supple and fresh, the spine is tight and flat, and minor pencil or ink date stamps are permissible. A book at this level has clearly been stored with care and appears essentially new.
Moving slightly down the range, the comic remains an excellent copy with strong visual appeal — vibrant, clean, and with flexible pages. The spine may show a couple of very small stress lines, each no longer than 1/4 of an inch, with no noticeable breaking of the surface color around them. The spine is nearly flat, and the cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear. Cover inks remain generally bright with medium to high reflectivity. The staples may show slight discoloration, though it is not immediately apparent at first glance. Some minor color chipping or flaking on the cover is possible. Interior pages and covers are typically off-white to white, though a creamy or faintly yellowish tone is acceptable.

Fine Very Fine to Very Fine+ Range (7.0 – 8.5)
A comic in the Very Fine range shows signs of having been read a handful of times, though it was clearly handled with some degree of care. This grade permits a broader range of small defects than the Near Mint range above it. The cover may have a minor fold or crease, and a few small chips along the edges are acceptable. There may be a small number of stress marks visible on the spine. The cover will show some slight surface wear, but it retains its original gloss and has no major flaws. Despite these minor imperfections, a book at this level remains exceptional and highly collectible.
Stepping down into the Fine grades, a Fine/Very Fine copy at 7.0 sits just a notch above Fine+ (6.5) but falls short of the Very Fine range. It carries slightly better overall presentation than a Fine+ copy while still reflecting the kind of minor wear and handling consistent with a well-read but reasonably well-preserved book.

Very Good Fine to Fine+ Range (5.0 – 6.5)
A comic in this range is unmistakably a well-read copy, but it can still be quite desirable to collectors. It may carry one significant flaw, such as a missing piece of cover measuring between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch, or a tear exceeding one inch. Stress lines around the staples are expected, along with creases resulting from repeated opening and closing of the cover. The interior pages will have shifted from white toward an off-white or yellowish tone.
Other acceptable conditions include a subscription crease, a reading crease, or a rolled spine, provided none of these dramatically reduce the overall visual appeal of the book. Some color fading, discoloration, and light soiling are permitted. Minor tears and folds may appear on the cover and interior pages. The cover may have come loose from one staple but must still remain attached to the interior — a fully detached cover would push the book below this range. Interior pages and covers may have browned but should not have become brittle.
It is also worth noting that a book's placement within this range can be influenced by the nature of its specific defects. For example, a copy that otherwise presents like an 8.0 but has a piece of tape on an interior cover would be appropriately graded within this range, reflecting how certain types of damage are weighted in the overall assessment.

Good Very Good to Very Good+ Range (3.0 – 4.5)
A comic in this range is complete but shows substantial wear throughout. Major creasing is common, and spine roll is frequently present. Cover gloss has largely disappeared, ranging from very faint to completely absent. The interior paper has degraded noticeably, taking on a yellow tone, and small pieces of the interior pages may be missing. If the cover itself has a missing piece, it should measure no larger than 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch.
Books at this level are almost universally marked by creasing, scuffing, surface abrasion, and soiling. Despite all of this, the comic remains fully readable. Any tape present on the book is considered a defect at this grade rather than an overlooked flaw, and will factor into the final assessment accordingly.
It is worth noting that the word "Good" is something of a misnomer in comic grading — it does not imply the book is in good shape by everyday standards. Rather, it simply indicates a comic that is still intact and legible despite carrying numerous visible defects.

Poor to Good+ (0.5 – 2.5)
At the upper end of this range, a comic carries all of the defects found in the Very Good category and then some. Cover gloss is minimal at best and typically gone entirely. Interior paper has deteriorated and yellowed, with small pieces potentially missing. Any missing portion of the cover should not exceed 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch. The book will almost certainly show creasing, scuffing, abrasion, and soiling throughout, yet remains fully readable with no missing pages. Despite its condition, a copy at this level is still considered to have some collectible merit.
Dropping further down the range, the book has clearly seen far better days and presents as heavily worn and tattered. All pages are present, and most of the cover remains, but the overall appearance is rough and unappealing. Heavy creasing and folding are widespread, and the paper quality may be very poor. The spine and/or cover may be completely split apart, and staples could be missing entirely. Corners will have rounded off with wear. Coupons or panels may have been clipped from the cover or interior pages, and portions of the front cover may be absent. Soiling, staining, tearing, handwritten markings, and missing chunks of paper are all likely to interfere with the reading experience to some degree. Brittleness of the paper may also be a factor. Moderate to extensive tape repairs are acceptable at this level and will not automatically disqualify a book from this grade.
A comic at the very bottom of this range retains almost no collector value, having deteriorated to the point where its defects are too significant to overlook from any collecting standpoint.

A Note on Value

It's worth remembering that condition is just one of several factors that determine a collectible's value. Rarity — how scarce or hard to replace an item is — plays a major role, though rarity alone means little if there is no collector demand. Marketability — the level of interest from the collecting community — is equally important. First appearances, classic covers, key issues, and notable creators all drive demand. The internet has dramatically expanded the marketplace, connecting buyers and sellers globally and shifting what was once considered locally scarce into a more accessible market. Restoration — any treatment that adds non-original material to improve a comic's appearance — can also affect value and is an important factor to consider when evaluating any collectible.

The following grades may be followed by a modifier letter indicating where within the range the item most likely falls:

  • (H) — Higher End of the grade range

  • (A) — Average / Middle of the grade range

  • (L) — Lower End of the grade range

Example: A comic listed as NM-H is approximated to be in Near Mint condition and likely falls toward the upper end of that range (closer to 9.8).
